Unexpected contaminants can have a devastating impact when protecting critical environments like data centers. At Data Clean, we’ve been called in to troubleshoot mysterious cases involving sudden accumulations of particulate matter, which has concerned facilities managers. These cases highlight the need for a thorough root cause analysis and proactive maintenance to prevent future disruptions. In this blog, we dive into two real-life events that reveal the hidden risks and solutions for keeping your data center safe.
The Importance of Data Center Cleanliness
Data centers are highly controlled environments where even minor contamination can disrupt operations, compromise warranties, or damage sensitive equipment. However, contaminants can sometimes appear unexpectedly, leading to urgent calls for expert intervention. These are not isolated incidents—businesses with critical infrastructure must be prepared to handle the unexpected.
Case Study 1: The Mystery of the Concrete Dust
Background:
In this first instance, we were contacted by a data center manager who discovered a sudden appearance of mysterious white dust throughout their facility. The concerns ranged from potential mold growth to intentional contamination. After a detailed on-site investigation, we identified the root cause: concrete dust infiltration.
Root Cause Analysis:
The investigation revealed that nearby construction work was the source of the dust. A disconnected floor drain and negative pressure created by an exhaust system’s variable frequency drive (VFD) turned the data center into a vacuum, drawing concrete dust into the environment.
Solution:
Fortunately, no downtime or hardware damage occurred. We performed a deep cleaning of the entire facility, adjusted the VFD schedules, and implemented a preventative maintenance program to avoid future issues. This resulted in a more resilient and optimized computing environment.
Case Study 2: The Humidifier Conundrum
Background:
In the second scenario, a data center team noticed recurring white dust on rack faces and air intakes despite multiple cleaning attempts. Frustrated, they reached out to us after their own efforts failed to resolve the issue.
Root Cause Analysis:
Upon investigation, we discovered that an ultrasonic humidifier designed to operate with deionized (DI) water was inadvertently connected to a potable water supply. The crack in a supply line led to the premature depletion of the water treatment tanks, which resulted in the distribution of mineral-laden water particles throughout the data center.
Solution:
We identified the issue with the water supply and recommended replacing the water tanks and properly maintaining the humidifier system. This preventive approach helped eliminate the persistent dust accumulation and safeguarded the equipment from potential corrosion.
How Data Clean Can Help
These incidents underscore the critical need for robust preventive maintenance programs in data centers. Regular inspections and timely interventions can prevent unexpected contamination and ensure smooth operations.
